  •  We've seen all this before. (6+ / 0-)

With the Irish, the Italians, the Poles, the Catholics, the Jews, the Germans, the French. Now, it's the Muslims and the Latinos.

America every now and again goes into minor or major paroxysms of xenophobia. On the plus side, every single one of these immigrant groups has been successfully integrated into the larger society. Sometimes it takes time, but as a whole, I think we've become more tolerant of differences.

    This too shall pass.

    •  I think you are right, yet all of thoes groups (7+ / 0-)

went through some serious hell before we integrated. I was hoping that we had matured as a nation. Apparently not.

It is still shocking how bad it was for folks like the Irish. I found a sign at a junk sale that said:

      Rooms 5 cents a night
      No Irish
      No Negro

I bought it for my Mom who is an Irish immigrant.

Getting Democrats together and keeping them that way is like herding cats that are high on meth, through L.A., during an earthquake, in the rain -6.25, -6.10

story of we being shitty to the new folks. I watched The Godfather last night, and couldn't believe some of the language vis-à-vis Italians.

But I don't think we'll see something like Korematsu come down again. There's a body of civil rights law now that didn't exist in 1942, and the body politic has a different awareness of what discrimination is.
