    "Attacking" religious beliefs.

    "Religious wars".

Does not your apparent belief in the inability of religionists to engage in a reasonable discussion about the nature of god and the universe, and the impact such beliefs have on politics and policy, in itself point to the importance of having such discussions?

    •  I haven't seen reasonable (0+ / 0-)

I have seen gloating and smug I know what is right and you are all stupid with your magically this and that. We get our values from all kinds of places, religion is only one. Personally, I learned a lot from Mark Twain. We don't live in a vacuum, at least I don't. Do you want to make a better world, a fair more just world? I do. A great many people who believe in god also want the same thing, that is worth working for regardless of what led you to the realization.

from what you see in political discussion?

And how is Mark Twain's lesson (he was, by the way, an unapologetic critic of religion and religious beliefs, and never shied away from either a public debate about it or an editorial attacking it) any different toward religious beliefs than toward political beliefs?

A great many people who oppose government health care also want a "better world". Yet you have no problem "attacking" them.

Why are you avoiding the simple question: why should we approach religious beliefs any differently than any other beliefs?

That's funny; I didn't see anything like that.

Show us "gloating," "smug," and "you are all stupid." Quote and link, put up or shut up.

Additionally, I would be very curious to see you explain how we could attack a religious idea in a way that you would find "reasonable." If silencing atheists is not your simple goal, show us what criticism of religion you would allow us to state openly.

Do you want to make a better world, a fair more just world?

Certainly. For many of us, that's precisely why we're openly critical of religion; we notice how frequently religion is responsible for making this world worse, less fair, and less just.

A great many people who believe in god also want the same thing....

So what? Why does that give them (or you, as their proxy) the right to demand that their ideas never be openly challenged?
