We had no intention of making this claim until we were informed of this "fact" by the Secular Coalition for America.  They're a good group and one of the more politically active when it comes to advocating for non-believers.

They let us know that there are plenty of elected Atheists in State Legislatures, but they were not aware of a candidate for Congress being open about this.

Now we know about Wisconsin - thank you!  And yes - I wondered the same thing - I think that (sadly) the religion of candidates was probably discussed a lot less in this country's early years.

Our country has had "non-religious" Presidents such as Thomas Jefferson and, just as well, leaders such as John Adams who were personally very religious and intentionally kept that part of their lives separate.  Unfortunately I doubt that sort of behavior would fly at the Presidential level nowadays.

I certainly never mentioned it in a stump speech, but some people knew that little fact about me.  And I am pretty sure it came up in a few conversations with people on the street.  Whenever I mention it most people disagree and tell me I must be mistaken (I attend a church regularly and sing in the choir... often songs about Jesus!) or they quickly change the subject.

I am perfectly willing to grant him the honor of first because he is using it as a talking point for an important discussion.  I just happened to be a part time candidate with lots of unusual things in my past.  Not the first Deadhead for sure - check out Patrick Leahy's love of the Dead, he gave  moving tribute when Jerry died.  I knew that the Gores had been to several shows and palled around with Mickey Hart.  I gave Tipper and one daughter some bootlegs when they came to WI, I don't know if they ever listened.  I was sure to include Tennessee Jed on the setlist.

Thanks to many of the discussions on this board I have become more vocal about it and more willing to discuss it. is America's Blog of Record
