    The original report does state that the oil is still in the environment, but the suggestion is that most is in some "harmless" state.

    Some years ago, I was working with some Oak Ridge scientists on a remediation scheme.  They would stick these enormous probes in the ground, turn on a machine, and the subsurface soil would essentially turn to glass, thereby capturing whatever contaminant lay below.  In one test of the system, there was a loud cracking sound, followed by a gas plume that came up from the ground into the atmosphere.  Apparently the electric field created by the probes interacted with some subsurface barrels.  The propagating material front curved on itself and broke, releasing volatilized contaminants.  Yikes.
