  •  So what is the point? (15+ / 0-)

Raising the frightening specter of gay sex in the military merely feeds on the stereotype that gay people are sex-crazed maniacs who, unlike straight people (the real scientific statistics notwithstanding) cannot possibly follow appropriate social boundaries.

but this one has nothing to do with being gay. It has to do with being male. Straight men like sex just as much as gay men do. What it boils down to is access to ready and willing partners and those of us who are guys know men have far less self control when it comes to sex than women do.

So, if homosexuality is no longer outlawed in the military it could create situations where horny young soldiers at their sexual peak might start having sex with each other in the absence of women. The Navy knows this well as gay sex is not uncommon on ships during long deployments. I've been told by combat experienced Marines it's not that uncommon in the field during long deployments either.

I'm not using this as a defense of the current policy of no gays allowed. It's just reality and it's something the military will have to deal with when the time comes and the way to deal with it is to enforce the rules evenly with no exceptions. In other words if they don't want men to have sex with each other in the barracks they have to clamp down on the men who bring women into the barracks.
