and thought, What's all the fuss about?

But now that I've read the questions from the "official" letter--wow, talk about pandering to the least common denominator.

Really, dear Secretary Gates, you should know there's an easier way to solve this problem, if problem it is: Simply have any service people, professed or suspected, wear yellow stars on their clothing.

      the homos wore pink triangles.

Under Nazi Germany  every prisoner had to wear a concentration camp badge on their jacket, the colour of which categorized them into groups. Individuals who were sexual offenders (inculding homosexual men) had to wear the Pink Triangle. Other colours identified Jews (two triangles superimposed as a yellow star), political prisoners, Jehovah's Witnesses, "anti-social" prisoners, and others the Nazis deemed undesirable.

It does present a problem that the military seems to believe every gay person will come bursting out of the closet (even though in civil life, many still choose to live professionally, and otherwise, in the closet).

There should be a means to identify them.

the pink triangles, just thought of the stars as the most obnoxious form of branding. Thanks for the reminder.

Really, though, if the military is going to go through this, they should be thorough--send the letter to, oh, members of congress and all full-time civil servants.

I'm with whoever said, above, that Canada is run by grown-ups. Most days it sure seems that this place isn't.
