  •  Actually you're the one who is unrealistic (4+ / 0-)

if you expect that people are willing to allow the American military to literally lag the country by 10, 20 years or more.

On social integration, the military has historically been progressive and has historically been in the forefront of, rather than lagging, social attitudes in the rest of the country.

But on gay people being open and in the workforce, the military is lagging by 10 to 15 years.  If you think the powers that be are going to let that continue, it is you who is unrealistic.  Amongst other things, you would be unrealistic if you assume that because gay people are fighting for this, it is something "only them gays" want.

Change is coming despite the efforts of people like yourself, in the military or out, to resist, and not just because WE want it.

That change can be smooth or rough, but adopting the attitude I suggest is one way to bring that change smoothly.  This is the military, those who resist can either get out of the way or be hammered down.  It's just that simple, no matter what is happening with the ridiculous and increasingly laughable attempts at some of those in the top echelons to slow things down.

It is in the military's interest, as well, to be out front rather than dragging behind, and they know it too.

it like it is".  If you really think "change is never gonna happen," or that it's going to take 20 years, you're not looking at the forces that propel this change, or are incapable of it.

But it is more likely that there are a bunch of people who are saying the equivalent of "change is hard" in the military because they don't want it to, but to actually believe that is stupid.

The military can actually change swiftly when it wants to.  When it has to.  And it does, have to.
