  •  There aren't any (6+ / 0-)

oil plumes near the well. If there were oil under the silt it wouldn't stay there waiting for somebody to poke it. Undispersed liquid oil is less dense than water. It wants to float. The silt isn't cohesive enough for a thin layer of it to hold down oil.

    •  well that's bad news then (3+ / 0-)

thing.  I know we saw everything float upward out of Gertie, but wasn't sure if oil (or darker mud, for all we know) could be contained under a layer of silt.

Absent further evidence, I'm sticking with my lighting theory.  But keeping my eyes open.

that kick up with silt. But eventually they settle back down. If they were oil, how did the oil get there, and how did the path it followed seal itself off? There may or may not be a small flow of hydrocarbons through the well. There's none outside the well, or it would have blown out dougr-style weeks ago.

        •  dougr is part of my reason for being so cautious (5+ / 0-)

about what I see.  Would make no sense.

I guess I was thinking in terms, also, off all the crap that might have settled when Gertie was blowing full tilt.  Don't know if there are particulates in all that was spewing, but everything had (and some still have) heavy coatings of dark stuff.  Seems likely to me that will all the traveling the ROVs do, all the silt that gets kicked up every time they move off the bottom, and everything else that's going on, there could well be areas of whatever that dark stuff was that are buried and get kicked up.  Certainly, as you point out, doesn't behave like oil, though.
