of Capitalism to concentrate wealth and power in the hands of fewer and fewer people?  Without some kind of countervailing force, one that must manage to stay free of corruption by the Capitalists, you end up where we are now.

Remember that it is deregulation that brought us here.

      discredited socialism..

But I think capitalism as we know it will also one day be discredited..

Look what's happened since Reagan..even the Democratic Party post Mondale became an economic center/right socially liberal party. We turned our back on labor and without a strong labor movement its hard to have a formidable left..That brought us NAFTA and welfare reform which were two of three things CLinton did that I didn't agree (the third three strikes)..

I just think if nothing is done eventually the current system be discredited.

The USSR is to socialism as the Reagan-Bush era is to capitalism.

Agreed. And I would add, this is my interest in sparking more 'leftist' type of discourse. I'm a full-blown, hardcore 'centrist', an aggressive moderate I've heard it be said.

Yet, when we have discussions on policy, more often then not I'm mistaken for the leftist who doesn't understand the system and expects unicorns and ponies.

And, I might quibble even on the Dems being socially liberal. I think that might be too kind.

First off, Russia is an impoverished poor country which is much worse off now than under "socialism".

Secondly it's collapse has to do with the arms race with the United States. It couldn't keep up because we are the richest country in the world and they are a poor country.

The USSR's authoritarian model of socialism is not the only form of socialism. Most socialists believe in a democratic system of direct worker control of factories.

of Capitalism to concentrate wealth and power in the hands of fewer and fewer people?

That has nothing to do with capitalism. In fact, capitalism is interested in preventing the concentration of wealth and power.

Remember that it is deregulation that brought us here.

Precisely. That has nothing to do with capitalism. Capitalism is not anarchy.

Unless you're someone who buys the Libertarian mythology that monopolies are all the fault of government "interference."

Actually, many monopolies do exist because of government interference. Copyright law, for example, has ballooned far broader than Congress ever originally intended. Now people get sued by the RIAA for sharing music. It's absurd. And anti-capitalist. Pharmaceutical profits exist because the government prohibits volume discount negotiations by Medicare and international trade with other countries. No matter how you feel about healthcare and governance, banning volume discounts and drug reimportation is clearly anti-capitalist. No matter how you feel about drug use personally, the government imprisonment of drug users - who are predominantly poor and disproportionately nonwhite - is clearly anti-capitalist. On and on, many of the problems with capitalism is precisely government acting to consolidate wealth and power instead of protecting the market-based system.

Ask your Member of Congress what they're doing to put Americans back to work.
