    FBI tracked King's every move

March 31, 2008|By Jen Christensen CNN

FBI wiretaps have "given us the most powerful and persuasive source of all for seeing how utterly selfless Martin Luther King was," as a civil rights leader, according to a leading civil rights scholar.

"Woody Guthrie was a Dust Bowl refugee from Oklahoma. A wandering troubadour. He was also a natural-born populist whose guitar was bravely emblazoned with the in-your-face slogan: "This Machine Kills Fascists." Though blacklisted during the McCarthy Era, and dogged by the FBI..."

    FBI Files/Malcolm X

This project is an inventory and index of 4,000 pages of surveillance reports on Malcolm X. These pages are available in their entirety at the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) website. This online inventory provides an index to the selected portions of the surveillance records, for which no index exists.

The Trials of J. Robert Oppenheimer

    J. Robert Oppenheimer was brilliant, arrogant, proud, charismatic — and a national hero. Under his leadership during World War II, the United States succeeded in becoming the first nation to harness the power of nuclear energy to create the ultimate weapon of mass destruction — the atomic bomb.

But after the bomb brought the war to an end, in spite of his renown and his enormous achievement, America turned on him, humiliated him, and cast him aside. The question this film asks is, "Why?"

"The country asked him to do something and he did it brilliantly, and they repaid him for the tremendous job he did by breaking him."
    — Marvin L. Goldberger, Los Alamos scientist and former director, The Institute for Advanced Studies

....that left unregulated, we've demonstrated throughout our history that banal and evil people will use us, use our gov't, military, and churches to crush us, first our leaders and intellectuals, and control us.

When I began thinking back on all the truly remarkable souls who left their footprints for those who love truth and the freedom it brings, just in this country alone, it made me cold inside. It was as if I'd seen the reality of the "machine" in full blown operation for the first time.

These four are the tip of the iceberg. And now, with the technology available for surveillance, it makes the crude tools back then look like a cake walk.

It's all about power, as always, the power of "the Called" be they artists, great thinkers or people of faith and courage. If, they become powerful enough to challenge the machine they become a threat simply by the nature of their integrity.

Their power terrifies the "machinists" because it's something they cannot understand and so seek to destroy.

The Truth is never about money, or prestige or power for power's sake.

I think America has come to a crossroad, yes, Sooth, an intersection.
