    he entered public service, he could be collecting both; a former colleague of my spouse's was counting on collecting three different pensions on retirement -- military, transit, and grocery clerk (which he did between military and bus driving), but he was killed in a motorcycle accident just a few months before his planned retirement date. (Still miss ya, Tom...)

    My spouse pays into Social Security, and money also goes into the transit district pension plan; while he won't be able to collect on Social Security until age 65 or thereabouts (he was born in 1956 so not sure what the retirement age is), he'll be able to collect on the transit pension at 55 or whenever he retires after that. That way drivers with health issues that might affect their driving can go ahead and retire and still be able to hang in financially.
