  •  Wow (6+ / 0-)

    That's a hell of a canvassing story.

I guess Mayfield is a little too close to Ground Zero. Who knew?

Somalis don't care when it comes to parking.  If Baptists were in the building they would park correctly.  (statement to media by owner of florist business next door).

"parking" was the ostensible reason for denial using a statute that said the zoning variance could be denied if there was an expectation of problems with public safety.

I've never heard of any other building being required to provide its own parking on site in a city, and imagine that the 250 people that attended the meeting at city hall to protest the "mosque" didn't find parking in the small city hall lot.  Some left the meeting saying "The Christians won today."  And I imagine walked a couple of blocks to their cars parked on the city streets.

The Somalis told us that many of them don't even have cars.  While we were there we observed one vehicle on the site (there are 4 parking spaces) while a number of Somalis went in and out of the building. We saw about 8 people there, but they told us up to 40 come at a time, just on weekends. This is Mayfield KY and there is not a lot of traffic anywhere in this town other than on the other side of town at Wal Mart.

Now, there seems to be some visceral fear of these Somalis based on the rumor mill (yikes, they've raped 8 people at the chicken plant since they've come here! not).  But you'd think that people would prefer them meeting 2 small town blocks and within sight of the police station.  Unless the idea is to get them out of town completely. . . .
