    If you own your home, you might consider solar panels.  I checked here: http://www.dsireusa.org/... and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any financing help available.  Sorry about that.  Since I know it tends to be cloudy a lot in the winter in western Michigan, ask the installer to put in the panels at the best angle for summer power production.  

    I would love to know where that extra money is going...

    Some of it goes for natural gas to burn in gas-fired generators, so it becomes profit for the gas company.  The rest is profit for the electric company.  

    Renewable energy brings national security.

      is also the gas company :(

      The reason I mentioned this summer rate is because it's a new thing--they never did this before. I use a lot of electricity, so I would have noticed.

      I wouldn't mind so much if the extra money was going toward renewables.
