and do we need to have achieved Scientology level 23 to share in this discovery or will a couple of six packs and a good imagination do?

The deficit commission was entirely a creation of the President's, and the commission has been packed with opponents of Social Security. Simpson is merely the most rabid. If you don't think the commission is going to recommend cuts to Social Security you haven't been paying attention.

As to what Democratic leaders intend to do, Glenn Greenwald has a video clip of Chris Van Hollen, Chair of the DCCC, waffling in response to a direct question from Cenk Uygur about whether he would vote to cut Social Security benefits.

      •  how do people stand cenk uygar? (0+ / 0-)

I heard it and Van Hollen says  "I oppose cuts in benefits".

Xavier Becerra - who is on the commission.

        •  Context (0+ / 0-)

He certainly did say that. I went and listened to that part of the interview and did my own transcript just now. Here's a little more context:

Well look, here's the issue with the commission. They're going to come up with recommendations that are across the board, Social Security, Medicare, tax policy. I certainly would oppose the provisions they were talking about if they were to cut Social Security. The question is going to be the package as a whole. And anybody, I think, has to say well wait and see what the package as a whole says. But I oppose cutting Social Security benefits, I want to be very clear about that.

Maybe you're right and he'll be very stalwart in defense of Social Security. Or maybe he means: I oppose cuts to Social Security as a standalone proposition, but, depending on what else is offered, a package that includes cuts to Social Security might be a good idea.

          •  suppose you are in his position (0+ / 0-)

            You have to fake reasonableness

And suppose the package comes in like this
            SS tax made progressive
            SS disability expanded
SS retirement age moved up 1 year for people with desk jobs

rule it out? Line in the sand?

            •  But is that a likely scenario (0+ / 0-)

Of course, nothing is ever really ruled out no matter what a pol says. But they're only going to equivocate in public for scenarios they think likely. What strikes me as much more likely is:
SS retirement age increased up to 3 years depending on year of birth
SS benefits phased out for incomes over $60K/yr. individual
Defense Dept. budget cut by 10%
