    don't care about your grandchildren.

They plan to build biospheres where their grandkids can grown up with clean air and water and avoid the unwashed masses.

They'll last until the spare parts run out and there are no places to buy replacements. The modern computers required to run such things have use-by dates, and the fabs required to make the CPUs which break down with time are either run flat-out to supply the demand from billions of consumers or not at all.

IOW, it's an expensive way to commit suicide. The good news is that they should be easy enough to find for future archaeologists wondering just what turned a human technological civilization into shit.

From a discussion of Jared Diamond's book Collapse:

Diamond says the rulers "were able to insulate themselves from the problems afflicting the rest of society." By so doing," the elite merely bought themselves the privilege of being among the last to starve."

I suspect that the last resources of civilization are going to wind up being used to insulate the elites from the consequences of their decisions until it is physically impossible to do so.

I don't mind if our elites drink the KoolAid, but I don't feel it is a privilege or honor to precede them into oblivion.

The choice our species have is ... either just about everybody survives, or nobody does.

Our elites are bent on making the "nobody survives" decision for us. They're obviously unfit to rule, but I don't see anything going on that will depose them in time to mitigate the environmental disasters in progress.

Here's a poem I wrote in 1999.  In retrospect, it was prescient.

        MOTHER NATURE'S RAPE

        The greedy capitalists' sins,
        profit and gain,
        reign while Chaos grins.

Slowly sowing the seeds of destruction
        with a manic push for production;
        lulled into carnal security,
        too blind to see.

In the end, many will have profited
        their temporary gain,
        then watch helplessly
        their desperate childrens' pain.

Wondering when they could have saved
        their tiny ones
        from dying of thirst
or a belly full of hunger.

A man will trade his mansion on high
for food and water so his child won't die.

Nothing will escape the planet-wide mistake
        of Mother Nature's rape!
