  •  What is wrong with a trade war? (0+ / 0-)

We import far more from China than we export. The first thing the founding fathers did was to put high tariffs on everything, so that we would make everything we needed. Free trade only helps corporations. I would prefer to make $15 an hour and pay $15 for an item, than make nothing an hour and pay $5.00 for it. Bring back high tariffs.

    •  We would lose (0+ / 0-)

A war means a winner and a loser and in a trade war we would lose. We don't even manufacture the basics here anymore. Imagine us without the ability to manufacture any electronics from parts to complete products ( think of the computer your on and the ones that run the economy)  without importing parts as simple as resistors and capacitors.

Look at any essential goods other than food, and we don't have the ability to make it from the ground up. Even processed food is going to require electronics. That means no way of even repairing and replacing worn out parts here. That goes for tractors and other farm implements to get the every basics of food unless we start making horse drawn plows and go back to gas lit street lamps.  No drugs, hospitals, et al anything we need and take for granted just for basic needs  these days has part or all of it made outside the US.

That's why we can't afford a trade war. It didn't work in the 30s and we were not nearly as reliant on the rest of the world as we are now. It would never work now.
