    merger! Houston Chronicle (emphasis added):

Mariner involved in nine recent Gulf accidents, four with violations

Mariner Energy has been involved in a string of at least nine recently reported offshore accidents -- including a blowout and four fires -- in Gulf of Mexico waters that were investigated by the Minerals Management Service (now the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement. Possible violations were reported in four of the accidents.

The article lists all the incidents, including this one:

-June 23, 2007: Flash fire and explosion reported on a production platform that was being decommissioned 74 miles offshore in 198 feet of water.
    [...]
Mariner Energy failed to comply with its own welding and burning safety procedures plan, the accident report says.

The anti-regulation crowd must be soooooooo pleased with itself right now!

Mariner and Apache have racked up almost $1M in violation (4) fines just in the first 6 months of this year.

        •  I guess its the pressure of " not (0+ / 0-)

taking jobs away" and the knock on effects to other businesses if the moratorium continued.Just some of the  industires that would  have been  affected directly - fishing, tourism, oil  which are all big employers in the gulf.

          •  It's not the moratorium that's taking jobs (0+ / 0-)

away. It's the disaster in the gulf created by these rig explosions and leaks that's taking jobs away.

may temporarily suspend some jobs directly related to the oil/gas industry, each explosion and subsequent spill affects jobs, not just in that industry, but also tourism and fishing.
