I wish I were as convinced as you are. But this firm, unequivocal statement from the House Democrats is welcome on many fronts.

As Beutler notes, the CPC has drawn such lines in the sand previously, most notably with the public option in health reform.

This time is different, though, in that it's not pushing uphill to establish a new policy but in defense of the most popular and effective long-standing programs in the nation's history, with a massive constituency, and it's probably not just going to be the CPC in this fight.

What's undoubtedly and essentially different this time, is that new legislation is required in order to pass cuts. So, all they have to do is say No. With the public option, the question was: were you willing to defeat the health plan just because the public option isn't in it. There was ultimately no path to achieving the public option.

This time they will ask, "Are you willing to see the Bush Tax cuts extended rather than cut Social Security?"  That will be the poker chip the corporations will offer because they can always get the tax cuts again from a Republican Congress which they will surely get if the Democrats cut SS.
