    Personally, I'd say the only time it's acceptable is when it's necessary -- like anything else that become necessary, such as surgery.

    You always want to avoid the extremes, right up until they become necessary.  In fact, I'd say that's a large part of the meaning of the word, "necessary."

      Exactly. Invasive medical treatments are bad. Should an illness become so severe that you'll have to undergo therapy, well, still not better but there's no way around it. It will come at a cost, though. Same thing with revolution.

      It just seems to me that people talking about toppling the powers that be or even only, as Elmar said above, show a "threat of force [that] needs to exist as a reminder" seldom consider these costs.

      Also, distributing guns, and weapons in general, all around the country does not equal de-escalation or trying to "avoid the extremes", I believe.
