    but before you get that warm, righteous feeling about how you aren't fouling the air and propping up regimes, better ask yourself where the various metals, lubricants and coatings in your bike frame come from, inquire as to whether or not the rubber in your tires comes from a plantation where a lovely old-growth tropical forest once stood, ask where the plastics in your helmet and jerseys came from, and on and on. Yes, an automobile requires much more in environmental disturbance to manufacture; but the only means of conveyance that costs the Earth nothing is your feet, and unless those are bare, even they have some impact. The truth is, until communities actually take the steps necessary to keep cyclists safe on streets built for cars, you are in danger because you are riding something that most people are too distracted to notice. Being smug will not protect you.
