As you know, this started with GAW's diary, which I replied to. I've had a lot of success, but I'm not quite there yet. Here's my spiel, thank you for reading:

I have not been back in the US in 18 years. When we left I had just lost my job, Aoife was pregnant with our daughter and our son was 6mo old. We were loosing everything, but most important was my health care. Aoife was in the country on an expired visa from Britain and there wasn't much for her.

So we gathered up the last of our cash, sold everything anyone would buy, and made a dash for the UK. Here we had health care for her and the children, and even myself.

I came in on a 6mo visa and just never left, knowing I could never get back. It was a risk as if I had been caught I would have been barred form entry for 10 years, but it was worth it to stay with my family. I became what I call a 'immigration prisoner'.

But that was sorted this year and I can now come and go and, more importantly, visit my home which I miss so much. After 18 years I'm missing it a lot, but with the downturn in the economy, I don't have the finances to travel.

So then GAW's diary came as a small chance to not only visit my country one last time, but to do so in support of Progressives in a show of solidarity against those who are whipping up fear and ignorance to get congress back. No more worthy cause could there be.

And people replied and then they started sponsoring me and before I knew it I was almost half way to my goal. Then I was half way, and then more than half way. Well, I couldn't stop there, coming so close, and so I ran with the idea as best I could.

If I can get a couple more sponsors I will be in Washington DC on Oct 2nd, standing with my fellow Americans for the first time in two decades, raising our voice and sending our message.

My eyes are watering just thinking about it, especially with me being so close to my goal. I'm trying to bring Corey with me too, as it would be wonderful for him to get to see his country for the first time, as well as experiencing standing up for that which you believe in.

Sorry for running on. If you find you would like to help, please contact me or use the sponsor button on my Wish on the site. You will have the appreciation of a displaced American who asked for a gift he had no expectations of getting, only to be shocked to his soul by the responce.

It would mean much, much more to me than anyone could possibly know.

    Thank you.

Liberals see George Orwell's 1984 as a cautionary tale. Conservatives see it as a blueprint.
