Elizabeth and Margaret Rose stayed in Windsor because it was much safer than being in Central London. It was a simple precaution to ensure the succession should the King be killed in an air raid. You may note that even today, as an example, Elizabeth and Charles will travel in separate aircraft.

Even Buckingham Palace was relatively safe compared to other parts of the city as the main targets were the docks. Mass Observation recalls that at one stage there was a degree of class discontent that the wealthier areas around the West End were not sharing the burden equally.

A rogue bomber did indeed hit that building which is why the Queen Consort Elizabeth famously remarked "now we can look the East End in the face". In reality both she and the King also usually stayed in the safety of Windsor Castle at night. (Wiki)

The King and Queen drove daily to London, returning to Windsor to sleep, although at the time this was a well-kept secret, as for propaganda and morale purposes it was reported that the king was still residing full-time at Buckingham Palace. Following the cessation of hostilities in 1945, the Royal Family left Windsor Castle and returned to Royal Lodge.

It is factually wrong that Elizabeth was, as was claimed in another diary overnight, driving ambulances during the bombings. For most of the 20th century (and before) the usual arrangements were that although they had stints in various branches of the armed forces in preparation for their role as their head, the heir or heir presumptive was usually not posted to highly dangerous situations. The younger siblings did serve - Prince Andrew for example flew helicopters in the Falklands War and Harry has been posted to Afghanistan.

The eldest, because of the succession, usually has less dangerous duties although it should be noted that today William qualifies as an air sea rescue helicopter pilot and may well be involved in rescues around the coast.
