Abdullah Gül is an Islamist. Not a radical one, but an Islamist nonetheless.

    Politics makes strange bedfellows.

right now between Islamists and more secular folk, just as the US does with its Christian extremists. Muslims need have no direct Israel issues to be in one of those struggles.

It's one of the facts of life that religions have periods of zealotry that go on a while, like the one that so damaged Granada in what I remember as the thirteenth century when zealots from Morocco did their best to break up its Golden Age of tolerance and accomplishment, burning books and the whole nine yards, and our Reformation, Counter R, and the various revival efforts that have swept our country almost since the day it was founded. Jews have had their share as well, the struggle between both Reform and Conservative against resurgent Orthodoxy, but they have not been as bloody.

It comes with the territory and is not necessarily all or any of it particularly Israel driven.

Mitt Romney said something like America has all of these threats from people who hate us and President Obama's idea of a rogue state is Arizona. Blah, blah, blah.

I don't know what scares me more, the batshit crazy politicians or the batshit crazy people cheering on the batshit crazy politicians.

that I'm scared about.  Romney will just say anything to get elected.  In 1994, when running for Senate he was pro-choice and claimed to be better on gay rights than Ted Kennedy.  By around 1998, he was pro-life.  By 2002, when running for Mass. Gov. he was pro-choice again.  In office he became known as a strong opponent of marriage equality and once again became pro-life in preparation for running for president.
