  •  There's a strong messianic feeling . . . (4+ / 0-)

associated with Palin by the Christianist wing of the GOP that is worrying.  The last time we saw that sort of fervor was for W. back in 2000 and even more in 2004.  Don't underestimate her, and don't hope she's the nominee.

religion is a big trump card in politics. Fortunately I think Obama has that end covered, but after him what? I'm bothered that our side would root for a Palin presidency. Palin and her kind should be nowhere near our highest seats of power, as they are more likely than not to signify the end of our democratic system.

      •  I am not sure he has the religious part covered (0+ / 0-)

considering that a large pct of Republicans a segment of Independents think he is Moslem, are not sure if he is  Moslem and not sure if he is a Christian. And Palin's campaign would be nasty, painting him as a terrorist Moslem from Kenya who is also a communist.

but there's a substantial religious left and an even more substantial religious middle. He has those to a large degree, more so than an atheist would. What I am saying is that religion might trump all other issues, like for example how crazy and dangerous a candidate is, if it were to be unevenly matched: say Palin or Huckabee vs an atheist, or agnostic on the left.
