  •  In Ohio in 2004 it was impossible to turn on the (11+ / 0-)

TV--any station-- and not be bombarded by the phony, false, smearing "Swiftboat" ads after ads after ads vilifying Kerry.  I know, I was there and I saw them. The blanket attack ads effectively won the election for Bush in 2004.

This is exactly the same strategy they are implementing now.

    •  Remember Blackwell Secretary of State (7+ / 0-)

"Spoiled" some votes. The thing that made me throw up was only in Ohio could you see the "Ashley" commercials Where her father died in a building on 9/11 and she said the only way she could get to sleep was to have President Bush reelected as President. Thios was when both parties wouldn't use 9/11 as a election prop.

      Think...It ain't illegal yet ! George Clinton

What made the Swiftboat crew particularly pernicious was that they targeted a real achievement, something the person was proud of, and presented it as shameful.  It's almost impossible to respond to that kind of attack (the perversion of Jimmy Carter "lusting" in his heart was an earlier example), which is why it is effective.  It intimidates the target.  Bullies beating up on the inoffensive.

Really, the target can't respond.  That tactic has to be communally countered.  The bullies have to be called out.

The organizer of the Swiftboaters, btw, had a personal interest.  He was developing commercial relations with VietNam and wanted to restrain competition from Kerry's brother who was also in business there.  William E. Franke is the founder of Gannon Technologies which, just coincidentally, had sold the Secretary of State of Ohio a proprietary computer operating system.

The Constitution is not a menu for an exclusive diner.
