in the communities around the reservations, at least the ones I've visited - Standing Rock and Cheyenne River - was one of my most horrifying discoveries about the current state of this country.

In August of 2009 I sat in on a Tribal Council meeting on Standing Rock in which a parade of people came up to testify about the attacks they had suffered by white students at the University of North Dakota. A few people had dropped out of college as a result. Tears just came to my eyes. Sitting Bull College, on the reservation, now has a 4 year degree program. Thank God there's a place where the kids can go to get an education without worrying about harassment.

I could go on with examples of how some doctors' offices treat the Lakota in the area too, but I'll just stop here.
