And it's the same issue, actually. When atrocities on the order of racial genocide and mass enslavement take place and are supported or insufficiently opposed by a people, collective blame is definitely warranted--so long as one acknowledges that many decent individuals did dissent with or oppose it, which I do. But that a majority of white southerners were for many years overwhelmingly racist and that Germans were overwhelmingly anti-Semitic is simply inarguable, despite the many dissenters. Just as today's GOP--disproportionately represented in the south and in other parts of the country settled by southern people--is overwhelmingly racist and bigoted, even allowing for the exceptions.

You must allow people their anger, when talking about such evil.

    •  yes, collective blame (0+ / 0-)

and collective punishment are tempting ideas, but I can't see that anything much good comes from that.

I wish more people were thoughtful and honest but being outraged is too much fun I suppose

      •  How about collective restitution? (0+ / 0-)

Jews effectively got it with the state of Israel (which it then unfortunately went on to abuse). I think that US blacks are still waiting for their 40 acres and a mule.

Anyway, if non-bigoted US southerners want the rest of us to stop dumping on all southerners, then they've got to find a way to rein in their bigots. I'd find it embarassing to keep electing asshats like Rick Perry, Jon Cornyn and Saxby Chamblis.
