  •  No, and nowhere do I make that claim. (0+ / 0-)

What I am saying is that the number of civilian and military deaths may have been, in fact many are certain would have been, much higher if the war were prolonged through a hard-fought, to-the-death no-surrender invasion.

Expedience has nothing to do with it. The overall death toll would have been much higher.

How do you tell the American people you have the world's most powerful weapon, but won't use it when their fathers, brothers and sons are dying in prolonged combat?

There are many frames from which to view the use of the atomic bombs. No one denies how horrible it was. As was the use of incendiary bombs.  As were the torture and starvation of civilians and military prisoners by the Japanese.  As were many things.

WWII opened the world's eyes to how horrific "total war" could be.  The Geneva Conventions and Protocols and the Nuremburg Trials tried to set boundaries for future conflicts to minimize the loss of civilian life, due precisely to what was realized about WWII conflict.

But at the time:  no political or military leader of the USA, or the Axis powers for that matter, would have held back any weapon that could have ended the war sooner.

Would it have been better if Russia had added 60% of Japan to the Soviet Union? How would it have changed the world to have had two Berlins behind the Iron Curtain?

Progress occurs when courageous, skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better. -- Harry S Truman
