    They just shouldn't be publicly funded unless absolutely necessary.  Similarly, seniors on Medicare can purchase additional private insurance, but the single-payer public system should provide an efficient, high quality baseline of care and service.

      But governments contracting with non-profit organizations to provide a public good is very different from the government giving money to private firms.

        something can officially be non-profit yet be paying someone a quarter mill to run a school with 400 kids.

        Can also play games with the land and building that can provide fairly substantial profits through tax breaks, which is one reason hedge fund managers have gotten so interested in charter schools.
