However, it's not just putting out position papers, strategy documents, etc., the think tank has to be able to market its work and get it into the media and before the public. We also have to have a name that makes it sound credible, important and forthright, something like, "American Future Foundation" or "Strategic Analysis Forum." I don't think "American Social Strategies" would work due to the unfortunate acronym.

Seriously, we have some truly profound and educated people on Kos and we actually should found some sort of progressive think tank. If you Blicero or you Corwin are taking the lead, let's get it going.

we need to start buying media outlets. This will clearly take some dough, but there might be more bang for the buck than even the same money for candidate support eventually. Nothing matters if we can't get the message out there via the corporate media.

can make 6 billion and give 100 million to the school system of Newark then there is money in the progressive community to create systems and self-sustaining business that can take on right wing corporations.  We need think tanks alright but they need to come up with new solutions...for example, if the Repubicans don't repeal the Health Bill, do we have a progressive health insurance company that can compete with the horrible for profit only health insurance companies that will draw on the 34 million folks who will be getting health care via government support.  No... it is alternatives like that.  Ben and Jerry on a grand stand is needed so that there is money for progressive ideas and progressive solutions and progressive candidates.  Then when we have a stronger organized grassroots can we then take money out of politics.  But right now the power is with the right wing corporations and most Dems are still beholding to them... they won't even campaign to support the easy stuff like how the stimulus did save a few jobs or that children with preexisting conditions should not be thrown to the curb.

Pass new laws to end media monopolization now.

    •  the truth machine/ better than KATO or Heritage (0+ / 0-)

The TTM INSTITUTE. but the problem is C-SPAN more than Faux.
because their idea of balanced is Kato vs Heritage and their idea of liberal is Hillary Clinton.
THEY TELL YOU C-SPAN is a gift from cable, that it's run on 5 cents of your cable dollar but what they don't mention is that Cable is...... a corporation. They also don't tell you that C-SPAN would have been a government mandate had not the cable industry stepped in and given us that service. It was c-span that started the "fair and balanced" meme with their equal lines for Republicans and Democrats and Independents. As if Independents aren't Republicans these days, effectively giving Republicans two calls to one for Dems.  When Bush was sitting at 28% in the polls they still got 50% of the calls.  Just saying.

OK! You've scared the shit outta me, I'll vote for "our" ticket even though I'm sick over what's happening.

      •  CSPAN? (0+ / 0-)

I love it.  I love seeing the legislature at work, firsthand, with no commentary.

Sure, they talk in between, but so what?  It's the only channel I know of that allows me to watch the sausage making in progress.
