  •  What's Wrong with West Virginia? (0+ / 0-)

I'm trying to imagine myself an out-of-work West Virginian in a gritty coal mining town getting ready to vote for this guy because I think he's the best guy to represent my interests.

I just can't do it.  All I can think of his the private jet and my old Ford, the muddy lane where I park it and his marble driveway.

    •  Why is so hard to imagine? (0+ / 0-)

Out of work coal miners believe, with some justification, that Democrats are beholding to environmentalists who would take their livelihoods away.

It's not as if prominent Democrats haven't been advocating policies that would shut down many of the mines upon which these people depend.

The greatest failure of the Democratic party over the past thirty years is their failure to speak to the economic uncertainties of ordinary working people.

Instead, of trying to understand what drives blue collar folks into the arms of the Republicans, many folks on the left, particularly among the educated urban elite (and those who mimic them for social reasons) have condescended to the genuine economic concerns of working-class Americans.

Just look at some of the comments in this thread in which working people are derided for their pedestrian tastes and supposed ignorance.

Fair enough.  Thoughtful voters do weigh policy positions before casting their votes.  At some level, at some time, though, we look at the candidate and ask ourselves what is about him which gives him insight to my problems.  This guy doesn't look like he as much in common with average voters.
