hoover and mccarthy, do you call them left wing? anti-communism and now "terror" are the prime drivers of the american brave new world.

obama just proves once again he is caretaking.

    •  this isn't about left wing and right wing (0+ / 0-)

it's about statism.  The belief that the solution to everything is "there oughta be another law".  State power tends to drastically expand under both left wing, right wing, and centrist administrations alike.

The Palmer Raids, federal marijuana prohibition, ban on private possession of gold, internment of Japanese-Americans, the only use of nuclear weapons ever in wartime, the Vietnam War, and Digital Millennium Copyright Act did not happen under Republican administrations.

How large does the government's reach, in surveillance, foreign policy commitments, the size of the federal code, number of people in the correctional system, etc. get before it becomes unwieldy to the point of absurdity and collapses a-la the Roman and Soviet Empires?

But the lefty's are always surprised that the people they support end up as Statists.  Righty's typically expect that every one who runs for office is a power hungry statist.

plenty of righties pretend they are voting for "small government".  What they get instead of course is the Patriot Act, TSA, REAL ID, more prisons, the war on drugs, immigration control, and war war war, with no real attempt by Republicans to repeal or scale back any government program at all.  Classic bait and switch.

from either political party in future.

This system will dodder along for a while out of sheer inertia.

With the Fed announcing that further doses of financial cannibalism - ahem "quantitative easing" - are in the works, you know that the whole shootin' match is soon to come down around our ears.

Hoover served under Presidents from Coolidge to LBJ.  FDR kept him, Eisenhower kept him, and LBJ kept him, so I consider him neutral from a right to left spectrum.  FDR was maybe his greatest sponsor.

McCarthy was a nimrod and a righty, but he was a jr. senator from WI.  without any independent ability to do survelliance on americans.  He just made crap up, which is a totally different problem.
