In Washington, the republicans have had not problem getting their "moderates" on board with their leadership's goals.  Democrats have democrats joining republicans to filibuster legislation that would pass with a majority vote.  Watching this unfold and continue for almost 2 years has been demoralizing for many of us.  Likewise Obama's unwillingness to condem republicans and his priority of not wanting to be seen as attacking republicans has been frustrating.  For us who understand the need to continue to reinforce the contrasts between the parties and their policies there has been very little in the way of leadership at the top.  I've given up tying to guess why that is.

But if Obama is looking for a reason I suggest he look no further than last August, Death Panels and all, when there was absolutely no push back from the top.  Who took their ball and went home then?
