  •  Change the rules to what? (0+ / 0-)

    The petition is rather vague:

We need you to agree that the Senate can, and should, change its rules with a simple majority vote on the first day it is in session in 2011.

We're gonna change the rules!  Yay!  But to what?

IIRC, you personally want the filibuster removed completely, right?  Is the "multi-issue progressive organizations that are coordinating on Capitol Hill to reform Senate rules" that you cite working toward that same cause, are they working toward a reduced # of votes required for cloture, or are they working toward restoring a bring-out-the-cots filibuster?

If it's the first option, I can't support that. I feel it's too dangerous. The other 2, and I can consider it.  But I've gotta tell you, I have a hard time believing that the Dems will be willing to start the new year with making a rules change that will be spun in the media as "DEMOCRATS CONSOLIDATE POWER!" or some such: they have a knack for being adverse to being beat up by the media, even when they know they're in the right, and they have a hell of a time breaking the Republican framing of issues.

They take them very, very personally. It would be awfully foolish of us to approach the campaign that way.

What they need convincing of, and support to do, is that there's a real mechanism available to them to force an open discussion about rules change, and push one through.

We can suggest what changes they might consider, but there's no way they'll stand for us dictating changes to them. That shuts the conversation down faster than anything else.

So we're talking now about making rules change possible, and juggling ideas. The rest is up to them.
