An OECD study of 31 countries ranks US students 15th in reading literacy, 19th in mathematical literacy, 14th in scientific literacy.

    and --

One factor the study did find: Students tended to do worse in nations in which there was a high degree of segregation along socioeconomic lines. In the United States, the study found a bigger difference among students from different schools and socioeconomic groups than in most other countries.

The higher poverty rates in the US contribute to the lag in education standings, as does the way education is funded. These aren't fads, they are trends.

This country needs a public commitment to improve education overall.

      destroy education.  The Republican
Party has publicly advocated doing its best to subvert the education system as a political tool to help win elections since before the mid 1970's.  That the current crop of tea party buy an office wackjobs aren't publicly laughed at every time they show up in the open shows that they have been working hard at it for decades.

Torture is for the weak. After all, it is just extended wheedling.
