minimum wage was $2.75 and hour.  We were paid $1.00 an hour and we got to keep all our tips.
At the same time I was also selling shoes for $1.50 an hour and 8% commission.
And I worked in the Biology Department as a teaching assistant for $2.00 for 15 hours of work.  Most weeks we worked 40 or more hours preparing  and teaching labs, keeping office hours, grading papers, and whatever busy work the department told us to do.  Because we were paid out of the departments budget not the university's budget we did not qualify for the minimum wage standard of the university nor did the university hold itself responsible for our being required to do work for the Bio department for which we were not paid, and which did not fall under our contracts as teaching assistants.

The point being that minimum wage is a myth for any employer who wants to get around it.
