though i wonder what the hell they are doing still being christians when the bible says that gays are going to burn in hell

but, whatever.  freedom of religion.  i'm a little christian myself i guess.

One thing you gotta give rich people credit for. They might have nearly all the money but they are really stingy about spending it, so, nobody benefits.

    •  The references to gays in the Bible (0+ / 0-)

reflect Jewish cultural values of 2000-3500 years ago. Those references are always part of a shopping list of God's no-nos (though dominated by hetero sins) and form a very small part of the various texts. Jesus, however, never said a word about gays or lesbians and famously defended a woman for alleged sexual misconduct ("let he who is without sin cast the first stone").

I would add that liberal Christians quite readily recognize that the Bible is a collection of ancient texts that are open to interpretation and in fact contain many anachronisms. For many Christians, the persecution of gay people runs completely counter to Jesus' teachings.

      •  who are these liberal churches? (0+ / 0-)

        i'd really like to know.

i tell religious people i know that jesus said 'he who is without sin cast the first stone' about sex so they should at least stop giving gay people a hard time even if they can't accept them being gay.

for example. Unitarians are famously progressive and pro-gay. Likewise many churches within established Protestant denominations--remember, there are more than 4000 of them.  Christianity is a very fractured, contentious and diverse theological domain. Liberal Christians, like other kinds of progressives, get very short shrift in mass media. The Tea Party groups and wacko Christians are front-page news, but groups that care for the poor, the sick, the elderly and the homeless are invisible because they go about their business quietly.  I know a lot of Christians who are musicians, artists, activists and you never hear about them. They're perfectly content to quietly do the work of helping "the least among us", just as Jesus demanded of his followers.
