I was bullied because I was redneck white trash. I could go to my family.

I was bullied because I was fat. I could go to my family.

I was bullied because I was smart and a band nerd. I could go to my family.

I was bullied because of a speech impairment, as well as general social awkwardness. I could go to my family.

I was bullied because I was an atheist...admittedly my mom was not thrilled about that, but in the end, I could go to her.

I was bullied because I was queer. It's the one thing my family never talks about.

Out of all the ways I have been bullied in my life - all of the above and a couple others - being queer is the only thing I cannot talk to my family about.

Queer teens are more likely than most to be discriminated against not only by their classmates and teachers, but by their families. Acknowledging that does nothing to divide the movement; empathy should always bring us closer together.
