"We Demand Change in America": The Real Significance of the One Nation Rally

    by Shamus Cooke

    Global Research, October 4, 2010

The biggest organizers of the One Nation coalition, the AFL-CIO and Change to Win, will be unable to push their members towards the Democratic Party for much longer: you cannot continue to campaign for politicians that you are continually demanding change from.

Sooner or later, the labor movement will be forced to break with this hopelessly flawed approach, which for 40 years has produced only disappointment, betrayal, and labor's decline.
When the unions declare their independence by raising their demands in a unified and coordinated manner, as they are beginning to do, it will mean that a formal political independence is not far off. Once the demands are clearly articulated, it will become overwhelmingly obvious that the Democratic Party has no interest in pursuing them, and working people will be compelled to consider other alternatives.

The labor movement might then address the issue of running their own candidates, as Richard Trumka, President of the AFL-CIO, indicated September 16 on the AFL-CIO blog.  They will look back on October 2nd, 2010, as the inspiration for a new direction that labor initiated, the day that labor realized it could unite and energize working people on its own.

    •  Labor, which was not all that strong (0+ / 0-)

coming into the Reagan/conservative era, has been under attack by the GOP in every way possible ever since.  It is easy to blame the Dems for not stopping this but I can remember when some unions came out in support of Reagan.  Let's face it.  There has not always been the solidarity between members of organized labor that was needed to counteract the GOP attacks.  And we are paying the price for that today.
Do I like this?  No, but we have to remember that the first measure of political power is counting who are our friends in Congress.  Obama is not king.  Congress makes the laws and he cannot command members of Congress.  And right now the Democrats' hold on Congress is tenuous at best.  Will organized labor find a friendly Congress if the GOP takes over?  Will we be closer to the card check, bringing back those offshored jobs or a strong unemployment insurance bill?
I know you have heard LBJ's call to "Stay hitched" but it was never more important than today!

equal pay.  Ask them.  They got unemployment to folks whose money had run out.  Ask them.  People can buy health insurance and not be afraid the company will drop them when they get sick.  Ask them.  There are guys working on road crews in South Dakota, teachers in Texas and policemen in California who would not have a job if not for the Stimulus plan.  Ask them.
Look man, IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU...OR ME!  WE ARE NOT THE CENTER OF THE UNIVERSE. This is about millions of people who do not have the luxury of sitting at a computer and chatting with people they hardly know! Has enough been done?  HELL, NO! But when it IS done, more will be needed because this country has been screwed over by the conservatives for 30 years and the damage will not be repaired over night!
But we will not be a day closer to when that happens if folks like you, who care about the country, GIVE UP ON THE PROCESS AND THEIR ALLIES...even if they do not know their name.  But if you need a name, start with Eddie Bernice Johnson in Texas, and Nancy Pelosi.  Check out their record. You have allies and friends in Congress willing to shake your hand but only if you are willing to unclinch yours.  And if there aren't then we need to get off our ass and go out there and find someone who is!  That's the manly thing to do!  Don't submit!  Fight back!

    •  What if we all contributed to the Unions (0+ / 0-)

and joined.  Is there any law against that?  Two Unions were talking of combining.  What if they all did.  I know they each have different issues, but they could accomplish so much more as a unified force.
