Better that a million guilty go free than an innocent man be convicted.  I read the New Yorker article and though, of course, I cannot be positive this man was innocent, it is impossible to prove a negative, but I am positive there was more than reasonable doubt.  From the evidence in the article, they may not have had enough real evidence to even charge the man.

This, along with the many "near misses" wrenched out by the innocence project should be a seminal moment for the country.  In a world where only a half dozen of the most backward countries still use the death penalty, if the US is proven to have killed an innocent man it should turn everyone against the death penalty.

It won't though.  There will be additional "safeguards" or whatever, but it will continue and there will be more innocent people (all of them poor) who will be murdered by the government, just like before.

BTW- GWB could also have granted this man clemency, Perry is not the only one on the hook, so too the last reviews by the SCOTUS and all last minute appeals.

Could also be extended to the whole state of Texas and the other states that allow the death penalty. Regretably I live in a state (Washington) that has decided it's the way to treat certain people.

What's always infuriated me about the death penalty is the false claim that it serves as a deterant to violent crime. Of the ten states in the US with the higher per capita murder rate only one, Michigan, doesn't have the death penalty. And of the ten lowest six of them have no death penalty. The death penalty does nothing to deter murder, but it's a great way to exact revenge.

our hall at the Lubbock Bill White for Texas HQ.

Rick Perry has done NOTHING good for our state.

Even the one thing I credited him with -- the vaccine against HPV -- was done for the wrong reasons (crony profits).
