  •  To answer your question: (13+ / 0-)

If the Fire Department will put out the fire whether you pay the fee or not, what sort of idiot will pay the fee?

"Idiots" who believe in paying their fair share.  "Idiots" who want to support their community.  "Idiots" who don't believe in trying to skate on their responsibilities to themselves, their family, their property and their neighbors.

    THAT sort of idiot.

    •  How much extra do you send in with your taxes? (5+ / 0-)

      Probably zero.

How much to you contribute to pay down the National Debt? There is even a special address if you want to send a check. That's how many people will pay voluntary $75 fire assessments, if they get fire coverage either way.

The number of free riders will make it impractical. If you want universal coverage, you do it through taxes. Not telling people to pay a 'fair share'.

You couldn't create a better parody of Kumbaya Liberalism if you tried.

      •  It's called... community (9+ / 0-)

and it works very well until selfish jerks get involved.

      •  I live in a rural area and (4+ / 0-)

all rural areas are suffering from lack of funds for basic services.  We pay extra for our hospital, fire district and emergency response.

I guess that makes me one of the "idiots" of which you speak.

        "Kumbaya Liberalism", you say?

We call it practical, responsible membership fees in our community and critical to our very survival.

        duh...

        •  Do you pay them? (1+ / 0-)

Or do you let your neighbors pay and then insist on getting the same services?

I say these services should be supported by taxes and up-front fees. You can't have a system where everyone gets served but payment is voluntary.

          •  Yes we pay them...have I not made that clear? (3+ / 0-)

In many areas there is not enough of a population to have taxes support the services needed or wanted by the community...so we pay the "up front fees", as you call them.

            •  That's ridiculous. (0+ / 0-)

If the services can be paid for through voluntary fees, they can be paid for through taxes in the same quantity.  See the logic?

In fact, Obion County is foregoing federal and state aid which would help them fund firefighting, because they have failed to set up a tax-funded fire department.  Self-destructive in the extreme.

        •  Basically, it's back to the "wild frontier" (1+ / 0-)

Although Hollywood has glamorized living in the wild West (or, for that matter, the wild mid-west of Little House on the Prairie), if you chose to live on the frontier, you essentially were on your own.

That's the libertarian (or Tea Party) credo:  You are on your own.

of the "wild west", in the midst of all the libertarian (anarchic) propaganda they always showed a basic human decency when it came to fires.  It was all able hands banded together on deck.

          •  It's an interesting thing to watch, actually... (7+ / 0-)

People move to the country so they can be "free".

The first thing they do is fire off boxes and boxes of ammo, then they let their dogs run and kill their neighbors livestock, then they get into a property dispute, then they threaten their neighbor (who calls the sheriff and that does not go well for the new guy), then they go to court (which doesn't go well either for the new guy), then they put their house up for sale which finally sells for a loss and they leave...we call them the "graduating class".

Having good neighbors, being a good neighbor and paying your fair share is the only way to survive happily in a rural environment.

Learning how to be self sufficient, get along with our neighbors, and be a part of a community are some of the most valuable and cherished skills we have learned in our nearly 30 years in a rural area.

            •  Not where I live. (0+ / 0-)

Your generalizations about rural living are incorrect, hateful and beneath this community.

                Expended all your ammo?

One day some redneck from the local fire department came by asking for money.  I reminded him that in Virginia the fire and rescue companies get funding from the county as well as the state.

He started in on the "You'll be sorry if your house catches fire" bullshit and I told him he had about 5 seconds to get off my property because right after I shot him for threatening my family, I was calling the Sheriff.  I fucking hate assholes like this.
