about the guys circumstances. Was his choice paying the fee or feeding his family for a week? I don't know. Do you? He could well be a fool but we really don't know.

But all that is beside the point. Every member of that community is at risk for having such a piss poor fire protection plan in place. If I was going to call anyone foolish based on what I know of this story it would be the community as a whole for not making better community protection arrangements.

Whether the guy forgot or whatever, the real point is that it shouldn' tbe a situation where he has to make the choice, or remember.  This kind of service should be paid for via county taxes, plain and simple, so this guys foolish actions don't end up being a disaster.

I'm afraid I am getting caught up in side arguments.  I agree with everyone that it was a crappy set up and this is not the way to run rural fire service. This is beside the point whether Mr. Cranick is a sympathetic character or not.

He may well be a cheap assed idiot but my concern is for the poor family for whom the decision is between paying the $75 fee and eating for the next week. They shouldn't have to make that choice and if it means I pay a little more in taxes in order to help take care of them then so be it. I do so willingly and gladly and suffer no fool that says they shouldn't have to because yes gawddammit they should have to.

        •  I agree one should use taxes (0+ / 0-)

I'd just point out that it's hard to imagine someone who owned property free and clear (any mortgage I know of would have required fire protection) was deciding between $75 fee and food.

          •  Doesn't matter whether he was (0+ / 0-)

or wasn't. Just as the free rider argument doesn't matter. There are those that can't afford $75 or are mentally impaired enough to not understand or handle the situation or any number of other possible scenarios and we as a community are indeed responsible for our less fortunate neighbors.

There will always be "free riders" trying to get one over on everyone else. And fire fighting, like all other community services, costs money. But we do not and cannot condone standing idly by based on fear of the free rider to the cost of the rest of the community.

p.s. in this economy lots of homeowners are stretched to the point where they are trying to keep their homes and feed their families by cutting everything else. One of the last things we tend to let go of once we have it is the home. Even further, with home values having fallen so sharply it is entirely possible that letting go of the home is more costly then keeping it since one could not hope to sell for what they owe. It is entirely possible for someone to be just barely making mortgage payments (and perhaps lying about fire coverage or whatever else) and doing what they can with whatever else they have to feed their families. I am not quite in that situation but not that far from it and have cut out lots of things in order to keep going. I'd probably have sold my house and bought or rented something smaller and less expensive if that was an option but frankly it isn't so I keep paying a mortgage and heating bill I can't really afford because there really isn't a reasonable other option available to me at the moment.
