    very well said... It's not all about the "individual" and "individual rights." These are both very important and important parts of any community and governmental structure but it is also very much about "community" and "community needs."

    And as you said...

    The way to deal with this situation is not to punish people with devastating losses, but end the practice of not taxing.

    Taxes are far more humane, rational, reasonable, right, socially responsible... than traditional libertarian thinking allows.  Freedom is a hollow term when you put it up against what happens to us when we don't coordinate our behavior.

    "coordinat[ing] our behavior" being another phrase for "community needs."

    Taxes are a very good thing. Community is a very good thing. Coordinating our behavior to the betterment of us all is a very good thing. Respecting individuals as individuals and individual rights is a very good thing too. The trick of community government is the proper balancing of the two.
