  •  Recipe for collapse of two-party system (1+ / 0-)

    Previous collapses in the US:
    (1) demise of the Federalists when Thomas Jefferson invented the modern political party and modern political campaign simultaneously.  One-party rule until the Jackson/anti-Jackson split.
    (2) demise of the Whigs due to sheer fecklessness prior to the Civil War.  One party rule until the Republicans arose like a lightning bolt.
    (3) arguably, the long flip-flop of the two parties during the Gilded Age: the Republican abandonment of civil rights under Rutherford B. Hayes, which was followed by long periods of general awfulness and effective "both sides are identical" behavior for federal government in the US, leading to the rise of the Progressives and Populists; with the new two-party system arising with Democratic takeover of their positions, sabotaged by McKinley, but culminating with Woodrow Wilson; with the decline of the third parties only coming after the failure of Prohibition, the Great Depression, and FDR's election.

We're walking into another one.  I hesitate to predict how it will play out because there are so many different ways.  Expect lots of crummy government followed by a major shift.  Worst case scenario is Germany 1930s, only-marginally-better ones include France 1789.

Optimum scenario is UK 1832 but I can't figure out how to arrange it.  We need a large and powerful "Radical" or Progressive wing of the Democratic Party which is willing to act as a bloc and fight against even other members of our own party.
