    has 44,000 students--undergraduate level.

States are extremely strapped right now, and this is an inseparable matter in any discussion of public education. This generation of students was already screwed (we just don't look like it compared to those not of higher education) and it's getting ugly, fast. These states with either lots of old people or lots of poor people and subsidized public universities--California?--are at the eye of the hurricane.
