    but more than a million blacks from 1910-1940 "voted by their feet" and left the south.

    I've lived with Yankee discrimination, (pre-civil rights) and it was nowhere near as bad as in the south.  In the south, if you went where you weren't supposed to go, you got beaten.  In the North, if you did this, you were ignored.

    Life wasn't great, but you knew the boundaries.  If you wandered past those boundaries you were just ignored.

    Bottom line, my family felt safe living in the north, we didn't feel that way in the south.

      that the south was not truly horrible for black people in up until recently. But I think that the region has made great strides and continues to do so. There are now many black families making the reverse trip from the North back to the South. I see that as a sign of hope and should not be ignored.
