    as a social fund. They see it as a dividend... like they are share holders in a company and this is their share of the profits.

    From what I understand, the money is actually taxes that come to the State of Alaska. In some ways, it's like a tax refund but it goes to people who never paid taxes. I guess, simply put, it a 'redistribution of wealth.' Still a very progressive, or democratic way of looking at money. Described in those terms, the Joe Millers of the world would probably hate the dividend. But it's rarely described that way and we would have to change the entire framing of the issue to get much play. Probably not worth the time this election. But future elections? It would be good to start talking about the dividend as a way to get money into the hands of the people instead of the hands of corporations... of course, Republicans say it's a way to keep money out of the hands of the government. This is an issue that can be pulled just about any direction by someone who wants to try hard enough.
