  •  Republican civil war? (4+ / 0-)

Has been going on since the minute McCain conceded the 2008 election. And it has been astonishing to watch!

"War" is too strong a term, though. It's a power struggle for control of the Republican party apparatus.

Let's hope it lasts through the 2012 presidential primaries.

Republican civil war has been in the making since at least 2000.  The first element was Bush's complete takeover of the Republican Party, as seen partly through the subservience of the Republican Congress in his first term.  The second element was the eternal conflict between the traditional conservatives, the corporatist conservatives, and the theocrats within the Republican Party.

Once the Bush political machine crashed and burned in 2005, the theocrats felt they'd been had, and some traditional conservatives began to think twice about what the Brand W Republicans had unleashed.  A breach between the disillusioned and the dead-enders was inevitable.  Some defended the Village Idiot, others who had previously trumpeted his praises scurried from the light, which only embittered the partisans who still backed Bush.

This has been going on a long time, and will not be resolved anytime before 2012.  In fact, I think the Republican Party's survival beyond 2012 is a real question mark.
