  •  Well, imagine if someone said (4+ / 0-)

"You know, anytime I see someone wearing a yarmulke, I get scared." Or, "If I see someone with a crucifix around their necks, I cross the street." Or even, "If I see two clean cut boys on bicycles in white shirts and ties coming towards me, I get nervous." (Those who've had dealings with Mormon missionaries will understand the last reference.)

What has happened is that you have a right-wing that has equated "Muslim" with terrorist, neglecting the numerous terrorist acts that have been perpetrated by right-wing "Christians" like Eric Rudolph, Paul Hill, Scott Roeder and others, and not enough of us have been speaking out about it.

A story: a few weeks ago I saw a woman in a lovely headscarf while shopping in a local Macy's, and I asked her if she was a Muslim. She tentatively replied she was, but was relieved when I just wished her a "Happy Eid" (I'd seen Keith Ellison's Tweet earlier in the day). Hope I didn't scare her too much...

I know what you mean about the Mormons.

Look, the fact of the matter is that while obviously not all Muslims are terrorists, almost every major terrorist act directed against Americans in recent years has been carried out by young Muslim men.  I believe it is perfectly natural for such thoughts to enter one's mind upon seeing someone, especially a young man, in Muslim garb.  I didn't say it's right to act on it, but you feel what you feel.  Juan was just saying what a lot of people feel.
