Umm, "they" would be members of the House.  Being in the top 75 is pretty good.  What is your bar?  Top 10 or get primaried?  Geez.

so maybe this is an lesser of evils scenario (so I'm not advocating primarying him, plus it's too later for that I suppose).

In any event, I'd be hard pressed to name more than 10 members of the House who are in any way a driving for for progressive values.  Which isn't surprising the way the system is, but it's sad nonetheless.

And thanks for clarifying the group of 455 that you were referring to!

is about as blue as they come. It takes in most of Montgomery County, MD (just north of DC) which is very affluent and also very diverse. I don't think there is a Republican in any county partisanly elected office (school board nominees don't run by party identification). And there are few Republicans elected from Montgomery County to the state legislature. So Van Hollen is pretty safe and is also well-liked in his district. While DC is an expensive market to advertise in, he doesn't have a serious challenge in this cycle, at least, and can afford to donate the money from his campaign chest. I didn't vote for him in the primary when the seat first opened up but I nevertheless support him.

You fell victim to one of the classic blunders, the most famous of which is "Never get involved in a land war in Asia".
